And especially for our beloved pets. But sometimes you can not avoid such situations when you have to take the animal with you.

The owners worry about the state of the pet and try to make it comfortable and safe. Flight with animals should be carefully planned. Then it will be less painful.

First, make sure you have all necessary documents.

For domestic flights you need only a veterinary certificate.

It is issued usually three days before the trip.

It includes: the owner’s data, nickname of animal, its sex, age, vaccinations, the result of tests for worms, and itinerary.

For international flights, a set of documents is larger. You will also need a license for export and international veterinary certificate.

Remember that the documents are not arranged in a free form but in accordance with the rules adopted in each country.

Exotic animals are the most difficult case. A sanction from the Russian State Committee for Environmental Protection is required to transport such animals. You will have to prove that the animal is purchased legally.

Secondly, the transportation of animals is carried out only in special containers.

At the time of flight it is a new home for your pet, which should be fully equiped with: water, food, bedding.

Try to pick up a more spacious container for the animal so that it could stand up and move around a bit.

The bottom of the “house” shall be watertight and covered with an absorbent material.

Many owners want to take a pet into the cabin. And it’s possible! Transportation of animals up to 8 kg in the cabin is permitted.

But you need to book a place in advance. Because the number of animals per flight is limited.

All other animals will be kept in the luggage compartment. Do not be afraid! This is a completely reliable form of transportation.

Baggage compartments are heated, and sealed the same way as a passenger compartment.

Transportation of animals is charged separately, because the container with the pet is considered excess baggage.

The only exceptions is guide dogs that accompany their owners in flight.

To date, transportation of passengers with pets is a priority for the most international airlines.

There are are even special hotels for four-legged pets in some planes.

But airlines are not responsible if the authorities of any country prohibits the import of animals into their territory.

That is why pay attention to the customs regulations beforehand.

1. Before you decide to take your animal abroad, call or go to the consulate of the country you are traveling. It is possible that to import your animal to that country will be so complicated that you’d better leave it at home with your aunt, uncle or grandmother. Don’t travel to the UK with your pet: once you land, say, in London Heathrow, as it will be taken away and sent to quarantine for six months and furthermore you will have to pay for that 2.5 thousand pounds. In France it is prohibited to travel with a pet younger than 3 months. In order to bring the animal to Argentina, you must have a the veterinary certificate issued and sealed personally by Consul. And to travel to Sweden with an animal you must obtain a permission from the Ministry of Agriculture of this country.

2. If the above-mentioned customs rules haven’t scared you enough, then you will come across with the strict rules of the airlines. Depending on the rules of the carrier, they will let your pet either stay with you in the cabin, or they will make you keep it into the luggage compartment. Animals heavier than 8 kg will be transported together with suitcases on flights of “Aeroflot” and “Alitalia”, heavier than 5 kg – “Air France”. “Aeroflot” takes extra charges for each kilogram of live weight, as a kilo of excess baggage. On transatlantic flights by Air France or Lufthansa you will have to pay about $ 130.

3. If you accept all these rules, take care of papers for your pet. You need a veterinary passport (issued to purebred at birth) or form number 1 (issued in any veterinary hospital). Records in the veterinary passport as well as the form must be filed no earlier than 3 days prior to travel. Do not forget about a rabies shot a month prior to the travel – you’ll get no papers without it.

4. If everything’s ok with your papers, take care of a container: in this case it is as important, as the documents. The container should be roomy, durable, have a waterproof bottom, with strong locks.

5. If your container meets all the requirements, you can go to the airport. Leave earlier: before registration you should go to veterinary station, and there are often queues there. The veterinarian will examine the animal for a fee and seal “export allowed”. It is enough to travel to Ukraine. To travel abroad, you must exchange you Form 1 to Form 5a – exactly same piece of paper, in English only. If you give the animal to the luggage compartment, then go to the cargo terminal. You should take a way-bill and register your animal as a live load.

6. On the day of travel, do not feed your pet and don’t give it water. You should take a long walk with your dog before the flight. Vets do not recommend giving the animal a sedative – drugs have an unpredictable effect in the air. In general, it is proved that animals behave well on takeoffs, landings, and the flight itself. So often travel with a pet is more stressful for the owner than for the animal – you might need a sedative, not your pet.

7. After leaving the pet in the luggage compartment, the owners begins to fear: an animal is transported piled with suitcases, it flies out on the conveyor, and it is kicked and thrown like a cheap bag. Airport workers claim that this is a vile lie: the containers are placed in a quiet place and they don’t not touch them without need. On “The Ilyushin” the pet can be even visited in the luggage compartment during the flight, on “Boeing”, although it is difficult – the entrance to the cargo compartment is located on the outside.

8. If you think that a trip by train with the animal is less exhausting, you are mistaken. You won’t manage to transport it as a stowaway: the trainman will not let you into the car without the note of payment (and you won’t get this note without a Form 1)  for the transportation of the animal. If the trainman let you in, everything’s in your hands. Usually it is possible to agree with a trainman so that the dog travels with you in the coupe, if the neighbors do not mind. If not – you will have to send the dog in a remote hallway of the first car. In general, it is better to buy up all the places in the coupe in advance.

9. If you like an animal abroad when you are abroad so much that you want to bring it with you, then you should register the papers in the reverse order: an international certificate, at home you should exchange it for the form number 1. Ukraine has its own rules on the importation of animals: you can not take animals from the countries where the foot and mouth disease was reported 2 years after the epidemic. To come home with some wild animal – a parrot or a turtle – you need to get a permission from CITES administrative body (Convention on international Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Without this permission your high priced animal may be taken away on the border, and you may be accused of smuggling.

In general, a trip abroad with an animal is perhaps not simple, but quite feasible. You just have to want it very much.

If you decided to travel with your pet, you should pay attention to the rules for transporting animals.

For example, two weeks ago, the newspaper “Arguments and Facts”, answering questions from readers whether it possible to export a parrot from Russia, without any references or permission, shared the following information.

If you have no desire to walk to the services for processing a permit to export your beloved pet, you can do this without it, if you follow old contraband method.

For this purpose, do it this way. Next, I quote from the text.

“According to the feedback of knowledgeable people, birds are put in a bowl with vodka, and when the bird is unable to control breathing, it swallows “life-giving water”, then it is taken out of the bowl.

Here it is important – not to overdo and not to make it drown.

Soon the “drunken” parrot is falling asleep. It should be taken in conditions that ensure the access to air, for example, the half-open purse, or in the men’s handbag.

The method is fairly reliable. The main thing is not to overdo with the dosage of “dormitive”. “Underfill”, however, is also not desirable – if the parrot wakes up it will make noise and ruin the operation”.

Advice is essential in its way. Indeed, this is the usual way to smuggle the animals.

And it often works. However, “Arguments and Facts” did not mention what it may cause.

Meanwhile, we should understand that this way of exporting the animals is known not only for the readers of “Arguments and Facts”. Customs officers also know about it.

That’s why, during the x-ray inspection of baggage, they pay attention not only to those objects which resemble weapons and other typical items of contraband.

And if they see on the screen of their devices something even remotely resembling paws, claws, beaks, shells or skeletons, then, as a rule, the procedure is not limited to the x-ray inspection of luggage.

They will not be lazy to personally inspect a suspicious bag.

Of course, it is possible in the hope that customs officers will not look in a handbag, put your animal in a bag of contraband or in your pocket, as it is usually practiced with the turtles.

But there is no guarantee that you will not fall across at the curious customs officer, who would like to fossick and in your pockets.

Degree of responsibility for violation of customs regulations of export of animals is different. It depends on two things: what animal you were trying to smuggle out of the country and in what quantities.

If, for example, you set a goal to export a usual budgerigar, which does not require any permission, except for customary international veterinary certificate, the conflict with the customs can be hushed up.

Found “parrot-illegal immigrant” can be simply taken away, or if the customs officers are forgiving, they will give it back to the owner.

However, you should not hope for the best in cases of smuggled animals. Especially when it comes to animals listed in the Red List.

However, it should be noted that according to international convention, import and export of animals listed in the Red List, can be carried out solely on the basis of special permission from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flor, the abbreviation is CITES.

It is clear that the list of animals which export must be accompanied by a permission of CITES, is huge.

After all, almost all more or less rare wild animals are included to the List. However, in addition to this list, there is one more, which includes animals that are generally restricted to be exported abroad.

In particular, the parrots are included in this list. As explained to us by Russian representative to CITES, it is due to the fact that, according to international rules, trade of parrots is prohibited.

Therefore, all parrots, living in Russia – a country that can not be regarded as their historic homeland – are credited to the category of contraband priori.

CITES has no right to issue permits for the export of contraband animals from Russia.

If someone ignores these rules, it should be borne in mind that parrots, as well as other contraband animals found by Customs when you try to export them, shall be confiscated and handed to the representatives of CITES.

The fate of animals depends on the decision of CITES, but usually it ends with their transfer to that country, where they were once smuggled.

Vain pursuit is also waiting for those who would like to export a turtle from Russia.

In principle, you can apply for the export permit for turtles, but only under two conditions.

Firstly, if you confirm that your tortilla was purchased in state stores, but not from a private owner.

And secondly, if you provide proof that it was caught on the territory of Russia or, in extreme cases, in Ukraine or Uzbekistan. And not in Turkmenistan, for example, where turtles are not allowed to be exported.

It is not easier to export other animals either.

The requirement of CITES to provide official documents confirming the legal purchase of animals, minimizes the number of not only exported parrots and turtles, but all other exotic and non-exotic animals.

Since virtually all of them are bought and sold at our wet markets, where neither certificates or vouchers are issued.

The discovery of animal in the luggage without the permission of CITES, as a minimum be qualified as a violation of customs regulations, to the maximum – as contraband.

In the first case, you can put off by administrative fine and the confiscation of contraband.

In the second case you can get from three to ten years imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Of course, the second variant threatens punishment only to those who smuggled large scale.

So when you decide to take advantage of expert advice to smuggle, don’t be lazy to inquire about the consequences.

It should indicate breed, sex, age, pet name and registration number of animal, owner name and date of vaccinations.

Three days before departure, the animal must be inspected by vet, who will confirm that it does not suffer any infectious disease.

In addition, the license for the export of animals, as well as the certificate of the Kennel Club that the animal is registered in the case of the exportation of dogs, must be presented at customs.

Canadian government makes a distinction for the importation of animals from countries where, according to official Canadian data, the cases of rabies among animals are observed, and from those countries where this disease has not been registered in the past 6 months.

For importation of animals arriving from the first category of states in Canada, a certificate from a veterinarian confirming that the animal was vaccinated against rabies, is required, and in a period of not less than thirty days and no more than a year before arriving in Canada.

If the animal is exported from the country where the cases of rabies were reported in the last 6 months, that fact must be indicated by a relevant certificate from a veterinarian who is in the public health service.

In this case the animal is exempt from vaccination against rabies.

Vaccination against rabies are not valid if they were made until the animal was 3 years old.

Therefore, in contrast to adults, upon arrival to Canada, they will be quarantined, and their owners before leaving for Canada must ask for permission at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Dogs that perform specific tasks (such as bloodhounds, hunting dogs, etc.) are exempt from all the above requirements, if they come into the country, accompanied by the owner.

The payment is provided for the inspection of cats and dogs that are exported to Canada, at the Sheremetyevo Airport.

Import of hedgehogs to Canada from the countries of former Soviet Union is strictly forbidden, because it is believed that most of them suffer from various infectious diseases.

As for rabbits, hamsters and turtles, for permission to import is also necessary, it must be applied in writing form at the same Ministry.

Each application is accompanied by a fee and which is $ 25 CAD for animals and birds.

Importation of birds from Russia to Canada is not prohibited, but it may cause many difficulties.

It is possible only if they are accompanied by the owner.

The number of birds is limited – no more than two for each owner.

The owner of birds must obtain a permission to import them from the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada by filling out a special form.

Prior to his arrival in Canada, the owner of the birds must inform the address of placement, in which he plans to keep the birds during quarantine, to the Ministry.

Before an entry permit for the birds will be received, an inspector of the Ministry should carry out an inspection of the premises and give his consent to its use for the birds.

Doors and windows of the premises shall be arranged so that the bird did not accidentally flu out.

The premises should be located so that there were no zoos, dove-houses or other premises where other birds are kept.

Those who want to export to Canada large domestic animals such as cows, pigs, horses, goats, sheep, etc., as well as wild animals, face with similar problems.

Special permission to import animals and quarantine is also provided for them.

In this case, positive decision is not guaranteed, since there are many additional restrictions on import of these categories of animals to Canada.

For example, in Toronto and some other cities it is forbidden to have all of the above mentioned animals.

If having overcome all difficulties and obstacles, the happy owner will be able to take his favorite animals and birds to Canada, he should take responsibility of them.

He will have to take care of his friends, feed and water them, provide a decent sanitation.

During estrus, the female animals must be locked up.

In most cities, independent walk of animals is prohibited, and they can appear outside the home only on a leash.

The animal must wear a collar or tag with a phone and address of the owner, so that you could easily find its owner in case of escape of the animal.

How best to travel with pets?

Dogs endure heat much harder than people.

During the movement, make sure that the dog does not put out its head out the window – it can be dangerous.

Furthermore, if the dog often observes the surroundings through the open window, it can cause conjunctivitis.

Remember that the sun strikes down most of all in the rear car window.

You can comfortably seat behind the wheel, and your dog in the backseat will languish in the heat.

Try not to leave pet alone in the car.

On the way, stop every 2 hours to give the dog to limber up and drink.

In particularly hot weather, it’s better to hit the road early in the morning or late at night.

Before you travel, give your pet a little meat. If the trip is long, then feed it with dog food. Do not forget to give water.

Some dogs heavily tend to feel car sick. Special medicines can help your pet.

ACP (Acepromazine) is a calming drug that is most often prescribed for dogs.

He has a very strong effect, so be prepared to see your pet hitting the sidewalks, like a drunk.

Immediately before the trip, give the dog half a pill, which has effect for about 8 hours.

АСР should not be given to dogs with heart failure, or epilepsy.

Valium-Diazepam has different effect, but when used together with propanal, has good effect on nervous dogs. Valium is often prescribed for cats.

This drug does not have such a strong action, like АСР, the animal feels relaxed. Effective for several hours.

By train

Try to select your travel time, when there are not so many people in the train. Small dogs can sit on the knees of the owner, big dogs are prohibited to climb onto the seat. If the trip is very long, then the owner should take into account the station time to walk the dog.

By plane

Travel by plane only with healthy animals. If your pet’s heart failure, then flights are contraindicated. Breeds with short snout (like Bulldogs) may become ill. Consult with your veterinarian.

In the airplane it is allowed to transport pets older than 8 weeks, but even better if the animal is at least 12 weeks.

It is important that the animal was a normal condition, because dogs and cats which are overweight may come across with heart problems.

Some airlines request a certificate of health, before the registration of an animal.

Inquire everything about the documentation required for the flight in advance, especially if you fly to another country.

If your pet travels in the container, then make sure it is sturdy, well-ventilated, of sufficient size.

So that your pet could stand in it, turn around and lie comfortably.

Edge, projecting at least 2 cm, protects during air holes from overloading.

Container and cage must comply with the international standard IATA.

Airlines can not take on board the containers that do not conform to this standard.

The container should have catchy words: “A live animal”. Write also your name, address, phone number.

Some airlines allow to take small dogs or cats in the cabin as hand luggage.

Before the flight, (2,5 hours), give the animal half of the usual food. Put things with your scent in the cage so that the dog was comfortable, but do not put toys, which can cause jamming of the door.

Only one adult animal or two puppies or kittens under six months are allowed in one cell.

Sedative medicine such as АСР, is not recommended because it may cause a significant lowering of blood pressure, which is dangerous during the flight. For very nervous animal diazepam can be used.

I remember, my toy poodle Lolita scampered on pure sand of deserted beaches of Cold Lake Issyk-Kul, the local kids shied away from it. It was the only consolation of the death spoiled vacation in a poor country with zero service.

I fully understand sailors of the past and present, who always took with them an animal as a mascot – whether it was dog, cat or parrot.

It is interesting not just to see something new, but also to see how your pet reacts to it.

What is required to travel with pets?

First, it is required for them to have all vaccinations done at least one month before the trip.

Vaccination against rabies is particularly important: your dog, walking with you through the woods, or a cat, playing on the infield, may stumble on the ground squirrel or a mouse, carrying a terrible disease in a latent form.

You should patiently and slowly accustom the dogs to travel in the car or commuter train, and the cats to be transported in special containers, bags or baskets.

They need not only fresh air, but also the sector of review: them behave calmly, if they see what is happening around them.

My clever Lux hid under the bench in the train, rather than lying in the aisle where someone could step on its paw and where it would bother other passengers.

And, of course, it never whined and barked. I taught it to the crowd when it was a puppy, and it has no fear.

In addition to take a dog in public transport, a muzzle should put on it.

(We know that 99 out of 100 dogs do not bite, but those who are not dog lovers are irrational and fearful people.

You can certainly explain it to them, but it is better to follow the existing rules.

It is permissible to get into an argument only in extreme cases – if stuffiness in the train threatens your pet heat stroke.)

By the way, except the trains, dogs are allowed to be taken to coach buses.

However, sometimes it depends on a driver.

Secondly, if you go somewhere further than your country house, you must obtain vaccinations and health certificate from the animal veterinarians.

Such a transport certificate is issued in any district veterinary one to three days before the trip.

In the long-distance trains within Russia, the dogs are transported in either compartment (with the permission of other passengers or you should buy all tickets in the compartment), or in the first vestibule.

(Of course, there are all sorts of exceptions, you know, you can arrange with a trainman about this …)

On the planes of domestic airlines, dogs and cats sometimes are transported in the cabin “on hands of the passenger”, international airlines – in special containers in cargo compartment.

You should find out everything in advance and prepare accordingly.

Tickets for the animals are bought before the trip and are paid as a baggage, with a particular charge.

And thirdly, you need to figure out the rules of import of animals to the country where you are going and where you will live with your pet.

Say, in Egypt, you and your cat can have holidays in almost any prestigious hotel, if you pay for it.

Most likely, the same rules are applied for the dogs, and in the UAE it is prohibited.

In Europe there are strict regulations for import of animals in the presence of certain vaccination certificates and only in particular (but not all!) hotels, where you can stay with pets.

If you choose to travel some exotic country, inquire at the embassy on local laws, if you choose something simpler, at the travel agency.
